Description
Nos. 2 and 3 Dorset Street are a pair of terraced houses built around 1790-1800 as part of the Portman Estate development, continuing from Manchester Street. They are constructed of stock brick with stuccoed ground floors, featuring a channelled design at No. 2, and have concealed slate roofs. The buildings rise four storeys with a basement and have two-window wide fronts.
Both houses have semicircular arched doorways on the left side; No. 2 features Coade stone guilloche patterned imposts, while No. 3 has an architrave surround and keystone. Each door is panelled and topped with a radial patterned fanlight. No. 2 includes a canted bay window with five leaded lights added around 1900 on the ground floor, while No. 3 has two architraved windows on the ground floor. The upper floors have recessed sash windows, except for the first-floor French casements at No. 2, all set under flat gauged red brick arches.
A plat band finishes the ground floor stuccowork, and there is a crowning stucco cornice and blocking course. No. 3 features a cast iron geometric pattern balcony on the first floor, which has been renewed at No. 2. The area railings are made of cast iron and ramp to standards with urn finials. These houses are included for their group value with Manchester Street.
