Description

The W H Hudson Memorial, located on the south-west edge of the Bird Sanctuary east of the West Carriage Drive in Hyde Park, was created in 1922. It features a rectangular bas-relief panel and two formal pools. The stone panel, sculpted by Jacob Epstein, depicts the character "Rima" from Hudson's novel "Green Mansions" as a female nude surrounded by birds in a diagonally ascending composition. In front of the panel is a narrow, long rectangular pool with a stone flagged surround, and there is a second similar reflecting pool closer to the footpath. This memorial is noted as an early and "notorious" work by Epstein.
