Description
This is a row of four terraced houses, numbers 23 to 27, located on York Street in Westminster. They were built around 1810 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development associated with Gloucester Place. The houses are constructed of stock brick with stuccoed ground floors, and have concealed slate roofs. They are four storeys high with a basement. Each house front is two windows wide.
The doorways to the right of each house are distinctive: numbers 23 and 25 have semicircular arches with panelled doors set within reeded jambs and reeded heads, topped by patterned fanlights. Number 27 has a segmental arched doorway with a panelled door and fanlight, flanked by inset Greek Doric columns supporting a dentil cornice over the doorhead. The upper windows are recessed sash windows, with those at number 27 retaining their original glazing bars, and all are set within gauged flat arches. Stuccowork appears as a plat band at first-floor level. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course tops the facade. Houses 23 and 25 have continuous cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern to the first floor. Original cast iron area railings with urn finials are also present.
