Description

No. 20 York Street is a terraced town house dating from circa 1810-1820, built as part of the Portman Estate development associated with Gloucester Place and Baker Street. The building is constructed of stock brick with a concealed slate roof and extends to four storeys and a basement. It has a three-window front. A semicircular arched doorway is located on the left-hand side, containing a panelled door set within panelled jambs, an architrave head, and a fanlight. This is framed by broad pilasters and an archivolt. The windows are recessed sash windows, each set within a flat, gauged red brick arch. A stucco cornice with modillions sits below a blocking course. A delicately scrolled wrought iron balcony runs across the first floor. Cast iron area railings with urn finials are present at street level. A plaque from the Greater London Council indicates that the building was the residence of George Richmond.
