Description

A range of terraced houses dating from approximately 1830 to 1835, with later alterations, located on Albion Street in Westminster. The houses were likely designed by George Gutch and form part of the early development of Tyburnia, initially planned by S.P. Cockerell in 1827 for the Bishop of London’s Estate (Church Commissioners), but subsequently modified by Gutch. The construction consists of brown brick with channelled stuccoed ground floors, and slate roofs. The buildings are arranged over four storeys with basements, and each front is two windows wide. The entrances are primarily on the right-hand side of each front, featuring semicircular arched doorways with panelled doors and patterned fanlights. The recessed sash windows include some with glazing bars, with those on the upper floors set under flat, gauged arches. A platband defines the stuccoed ground floors, and a sill band is present on the third floor, with stucco cornices and blocking courses above. First-floor balconies are made of cast iron with a geometric pattern. Cast iron spearhead railings are also present. This range represents an early phase of the Tyburnia development.
