Description
Nos 1 to 23 (odd) and No 29 in Shepherd Market, Westminster, are part of a market block of shops and houses built in 1860, representing a uniform rebuilding of a significant portion of the 18th-century market complex. The structure is made of yellow brick and stucco, featuring a rectangular block with a passageway in the middle and splayed corners, topped with slate roofs. It stands three storeys tall.
The individual shop fronts are two windows wide to the east, with one window returning onto Shepherd Street, and three windows wide to the east for Nos 1 to 5 odd, along with one window wide to the north for Nos 7 to 23 odd. The shop fronts are simply designed with pilasters and corniced fascias, although the front of No 8 Shepherd Street was altered in the mid-20th century. The recessed sash windows, some of which still have glazing bars, are set under gauged arches. Above the passageway are two enriched architraved windows with a date inscribed above.
A crowning entablature encircles the block, featuring a dentil cornice and a blocking course, with a panel on the east front inscribed "Shepherd Market." Nos 15 and 17 are centrally located in the block flanking the passageway. Shepherd Market was originally laid out around 1735 and built around 1746 by Edward Shepherd, who developed the area on the Grosvenor and Cavendish estates. No 29, dating from around 1840, is now part of No 14 Shepherd Street and is stuccoed with a slate mansard roof, standing two storeys tall with one corniced window on the first floor above an altered shop.
