Description
This building, known as the former Number 18, is a pair of terrace houses located at the corner of Shepherd Street in the City of Westminster. They were built in the late 18th century, possibly around the mid-18th century. The houses are constructed of yellow brick, with the front of the right-hand house refaced in red brick, and feature slate roofs. They stand three stories tall with dormered mansards. Each house has a front that is two windows wide, with returns that are four windows wide.
The ground floors have early to mid-19th century shop fronts that were altered in the mid-20th century. The upper floors are fitted with recessed sash windows that have no glazing bars, all set under flat gauged brick arches. The buildings have parapets with copings. This pair of houses is part of the Shepherd Market development, which was laid out around 1735 and built around 1746. Edward Shepherd, who was the builder, designer, and promoter, was responsible for this development on the Grosvenor and Cavendish Estates.
