Description

TQ 2980 CITY OF WESTMINSTER SHAFTESBURY AVENUE 71/201 1/2/1974 Nos 20-24 (even) (formerly No 22) GV II Commercial building. Circa 1900. Red brick, some red sandstone, slated mansard. Free Dutch manner. 4 main storeys plus attic. 14 main bays with Dutch gable over 3 left hand bays and over bays 8, 9 and 10. Segmental pedimented doorways with red sandstone surrounds to first, ninth and after fourteenth bays. Corinthian pilasters backing second and third floors to bays 8, 9 and 10 Square-headed casement windows except to top storey, which is round-headed. Richly carved brick frieze above second floor to outer bays; cornice above third floor. Dutch gableddormers; corner tower to right with pointed roof. Bay windowed timber shopfronts to ground floor with curved plate glass and arched lights over. Return to right in red sandstone.
