Description

Nos 20-24 Shaftesbury Avenue is a commercial building dating from around 1900. It features red brick with some red sandstone and a slated mansard roof, designed in a Free Dutch manner. The building has four main storeys plus an attic and consists of 14 main bays. A Dutch gable is present over the three left-hand bays and over bays 8, 9, and 10. The doorways, which have segmental pediments, are located at the first, ninth, and after the fourteenth bays, and they are framed with red sandstone surrounds. Corinthian pilasters support the second and third floors of bays 8, 9, and 10. The windows are square-headed casements, except for the top storey, which features round-headed windows. A richly carved brick frieze runs above the second floor on the outer bays, topped by a cornice above the third floor. The building has Dutch gabled dormers and a corner tower on the right with a pointed roof. The ground floor has bay windowed timber shopfronts with curved plate glass and arched lights above, and there is a return to the right in red sandstone.
