Description

The Trocadero, located on Coventry Street in the City of Westminster, is a former Lyons Corner House built in 1907 by W J Ancell for the corner block with Rupert Street, with an extension added between 1921 and 1923 by F J Mills. The building features a white glazed terracotta facade and slate roofs. The earlier corner block exhibits a lively and crowded Free Baroque style, while the larger Mills extension has simpler classical features.

The corner block consists of four main storeys and is two windows wide on each side of the bowed corner. The ground floor was refaced in the 1980s but maintains a design that is in keeping with the original, articulated by pilaster-piers. The tripartite windows, supported by consoles that rise from the first-floor windows to hold up the second-floor balconies, are flanked by rusticated Ionic columns. The outer bays and the bowed corner feature broken segmental pediments, which frame the attic storey windows. Above, there is a balustraded parapet and attic pavilions flanking an inset cupola, topped with columns supporting an 'onion' ribbed dome.

The 1921-23 extension is four tall storeys high and nine windows wide. The ground floor includes a central entrance from the 1980s and two large display windows, flanked by original coupled Roman Doric columns and a deep entablature. The first and second floors have windows grouped in three major bays, with the central window of each group on the first floor set within a large aedicule that features an enriched console-key breaking into a pediment, articulated by pilasters and panelled piers. The top floor has a square piered deep loggia beneath a bold crowning cornice and parapet, with tall pediment-gable capped chimney stacks. This building is a well-preserved example of the Lyons Corner House style.
