Description
These buildings, located at 289-305 and 313-319 Regent Street and 3 Cavendish Place, are offices and shops that flank the University of Westminster, formerly known as the Polytechnic of Central London.
Nos 289-293 were constructed around 1935 by C T Armstrong, while No 295 was designed by E Souster around the same time. Nos 313 to 319 were built by Angell and Curtis between 1929 and 1935. The buildings are made of Portland stone and feature slate roofs, designed in a classical style that complements the nearby University of Westminster.
They rise four storeys high and include basements, attics, and two tiers of dormers in a mansard roof above a pilastered ground floor. The ground floor has mid to late 20th-century shop fronts. The facades have twelve and nine window bays, with one corner window that is splayed and four windows returning to Margaret Street, as well as twelve windows returning to Cavendish Place. The buildings also feature recessed metal casement windows, string courses, sill courses, and stone balconies. An entablature with a blocking course and a balustraded parapet completes the design.
