Description
No. 5 Cavendish Square is a substantial terrace house built around 1740, with 19th-century and some early 20th-century alterations. The building has three storeys that have been heightened to four, along with a basement and a slated mansard roof featuring dormers. It is constructed of brown brick, with a stuccoed ground floor. The fourth floor is adorned with a stone cornice, and there is a sill band on the third floor. An early 19th-century Ionic columned porch enhances the entrance. The house has four windows, and a continuous cast iron balcony, which projects over the porch, was added around 1900 in a bombé style reminiscent of early 19th-century designs. The revealed sash windows have flat gauged arches, and those on the first floor are framed with stucco architraves. There are cast iron area railings surrounding the property. Inside, the house retains a front compartment staircase featuring carved brackets at the tread ends, twisted balusters, and column newels with a ramped handrail. This building was once the home of Quintin Hogg, as noted by a plaque from the Greater London Council.
