Description
Nos 11 and 14, including the bridge, are a pair of grand Palladian townhouses built around 1770, located on the north side of Cavendish Square in Westminster. The symmetrical fronts are designed in the style of John Vardy, featuring ashlar Portland stone, slate roofs, three storeys, a basement, and a mansard roof with five windows that have glazing bar sashes. The upper floors are adorned with a giant Corinthian order, while the central three bays are advanced and supported by engaged columns, topped with a pediment that has sculpted palm leaves framing an oculus. The central doorway is flanked by Doric columns with vermiculated blocking, and the windows on either side have similar vermiculated Gothic surrounds. A matching doorway is located on the brick return. The wrought iron area railings include scroll lamp standards and extinguishers. The ashlar bridge link, which is set back, features a Madonna and Child sculpture by Jacob Epstein above the arch. The interiors are notable for their rich plasterwork, scrolled wrought iron staircase balustrades, and marble fireplaces. The houses were speculatively built by Mr. Tufnell, possibly using masonry that was prepared for an unsuccessful Academy of the Society of Dilettanti that was intended for the site.
