Description

This is a terrace house located on the corner of Cavendish Square, built in the mid-1720s by Edward Shepherd. It was part of the development of the north side of the square undertaken after 1723 for the Duke of Chandos. Originally, this corner house was balanced by a twin building on the corner of Chandos Street, but that building was demolished in the late 19th century.

The house is constructed of brown brick with a slate roof. It has a basement, four storeys, and an attic. There are five windows facing onto Cavendish Square. The ground floor has a rusticated stone facing, dating from an early 19th century alteration, with arched windows. Original features include stone rusticated quoins, a bracketed stone cornice above the second floor, and a plat band and sill band to the first floor. The windows are revealed sash windows with flat gauged arches. Early 19th century balustraded panels were added below the sills on the first floor. The main entrance has been reset into the Harley Street return and is a semi-circular arched Venetian composition with pilasters and side lights. A mansard roof with dormers has been added as a later alteration.
