Description
No. 17 Cavendish Square is a terrace house built in the 1770s, with alterations made around 1800 and in the early 20th century. It features a brown brick exterior and a slate roof, situated on the corner with Wigmore Street. The building has three storeys, a basement, and a mansard roof with dormers.
The first floor has a sill band, which was cut when the windows were lengthened around 1800, and a bracketed stone cornice with a blocking course. The façade is broad with three windows, all of which are sash windows that retain their original stone architraves. The ground and first floor windows have pulvinated friezes, and the first floor features a continuous cast iron balcony from around 1800.
To the left, there is a wide segmental arched doorway with sidelights and a fanlight, which is an early 19th-century addition. Wrought iron area railings are present as well. The blind return to Wigmore Street showcases neo-Adam style pilasters on the ground floor, with shallow relief "graces" between pairs of pilasters under an entablature, all crafted in stucco.
Inside, there are notable features including a hall with an Ionic column screen at the base of the stairs, which rise to the full height of the building and are top-lit. The cut strings have a wrought iron scrolled balustrade, and the upper part of the well is decorated with large Rococo framed stucco panels. The original doorcases and mahogany doors are preserved. The first floor drawing room boasts an Adamesque ceiling with a tripod frieze and stucco relief trophies above the doors, while a rear first floor room retains a similar oval ceiling design.
