Description
14 Cavendish Place is a terraced town house built in the mid 18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the early and mid 19th century. The building features a stuccoed brick exterior and a slate roof, rising four storeys with a basement and an attic storey that has been heightened.
The façade is three windows wide, with a rusticated ground floor that includes a mid 19th century Doric porch on the left, complete with a balustrade. The first floor windows are adorned with architraves and pulvinated friezes, topped with cornices, and a pediment on consoles above the central window. The sashes do not have glazing bars. The second floor features early 19th century bowed cast iron balconettes. An original stone cyma cornice is present at the third floor level. The west return has mid 19th century alterations, while the first floor Palladian stairlight is original but has been modified and is inscribed under the arch. The north elevation of the wing, dating from the early 19th century, is bowed through two storeys and includes cast iron balconies with Greek fret and geometric patterns.
Inside, the house retains mouldings, plasterwork, and doorcases from the mid to late 18th century and early 19th century, along with an original open string stone staircase featuring a scroll pattern wrought iron balustrade. There is also a plaque from the Greater London Council indicating that this was the residence of architect George Edmund Street.
