Description

This building, located at 172-206 Regent Street in Westminster, is a Grade II listed block of offices and shops. It was constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and features a roughly symmetrical range of various builds. The exterior is made of Portland stone with slate roofs.

The central block, consisting of Nos 184-186, was built around 1897-1899 by W. Woodward in a Franco-Flemish Renaissance style. The south pavilion dates from around 1915 and the north pavilion from around 1922, both designed by J. J. Joass. The main north and south blocks were primarily constructed around 1905, mostly following designs by H. Tanner, with Nos 174 and 176 designed by Yates, Cook and Darbyshire, and Nos 200-202 by Collcutt and Hamp, all in a classical Beaux Arts style.

The building stands five storeys tall with dormers in a steep mansard roof. The major bays are arranged in a rhythm of 1:5:3:5:1. The ground floor features mid-20th century shop fronts, which are still defined by pilasters that support an entablature. The central block (Nos 184-186) showcases elaborate fenestration and decorative orders on each upper floor, complete with loggias, balustraded balconies, and a parapet.

The pavilions and the main blocks have architraved casement windows with cornices, typically grouped as three windows per major bay, with the central window being tripartite and topped with a segmental pediment. A bracketed main cornice supports a balustraded parapet adorned with urns. The center and pavilions feature segmental pediments above the dormers, and there are continuous cast iron balconies on the second floor of both the pavilions and main blocks.
