Description

This is a terrace of shops and residential flats built between 1886 and 1887 by W.H. Powell as part of the redevelopment of Mount Street for the Grosvenor Estate. The building is constructed from banded buff Doulton terracotta and yellow brick, with a steep-pitched tiled roof. It is designed in an ornate Flemish and Renaissance style, and comprises four storeys with a two-tier attic. The terrace has twelve bays.

The ground floor retains its original shop fronts, featuring segmental arched display windows and elliptical arched doorways, all set under a continuous decorated entablature. The upper floors have mullioned and transomed casement windows; alternate bays are canted over three storeys, with the central pair linked by arches and balconies. The top storey is corbelled with decorated and shaped gables, and masonry dormers which break the parapet. Number 125 has an entrance set under a square bay to a splayed corner, and differs from the rest of the terrace as it lacks the corbelled top storey. The west return is largely blind, with prominent tall chimney stacks constructed of banded brick and terracotta.
