Description

This is a motor garage, dating to circa 1906, now a residence. It was designed by J. Leonard Williams for Charles Ansell, of 11 Hill Street, which is located on the opposite side of the mews. The building is constructed of brick, with a rough-harled and whitewashed finish. It has a roof of sand-faced, hand-made tiles, including dormers, and segmental gabled ends on the returns. The structure is two storeys high with attics. There are five windows on the front and two on the left-hand return. The ground floor originally featured panelled oak garage doors with glazed tops, each divided into four panes. The first floor has sash windows, flush with exposed boxing, with heads positioned just below a projecting modillion eaves cornice that runs around the entire building. A segmental pediment tops the building, featuring a large, architraved oculus with a keystone. Original lead rainwater heads and pipes remain. No. 4 Hay's Mews contributes to a group value alongside No. 11 Hill Street.
