Description

7 Charles Street is a large Edwardian house with a Portland stone ashlar facade and a slate roof. Built in the early 20th century, it presents a tall, narrow frontage in a Free Style composition that draws on the architectural character of the 17th and 18th centuries. The house has five main storeys plus an attic set within a gable, and is two bays wide. A wide, rusticated segmental arched doorway is on the right-hand side, and above it are windows of a Venetian style, with decorative blocking and rustication, located at mezzanine levels to illuminate the main staircase. The left-hand bay features a ground-floor timber casement window with small panes, situated within a loggia, and below a first-floor canted mullioned and transomed window topped with a segmental pediment. The upper floors have mullioned casements with banded architraves. Mid-20th century casements have been added to the attic, brought forward to the reveal edges. A shallow coping defines the gable.
