Description

A row of terraced houses, dating from approximately 1810 to 1820, forming part of the Montagu Square development on the Portman Estate. The houses were designed by J.T. Parkinson. They are constructed of stock brick, with Nos. 46 and 48 having a stuccoed ground floor. The roofs are hidden behind slate. The houses are four storeys high with a basement, and each front is two windows wide.

A semicircular arched doorway is located on the left-hand side, at No. 48, featuring stucco pilasters and an entablature. The doorways have panelled doors set in reeded jambs, with fanlights above; Nos. 42 and 50 retain their original patterned glazing. The windows are recessed glazing bar sash windows. The ground floor windows of No. 50 have stucco architraves, with stucco reveals and flat gauged arches above. A plat band marks the finish of the ground floor stuccowork on Nos. 46 and 48. The houses have parapets with stone copings. No. 42 features a continuous, cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern on the first floor, while the remaining houses have similar, smaller balconettes to their first floor windows. The front is bounded by cast iron area railings with urn finials.
