Description

This is a pair of houses with a linking range, built around 1830 in a residential area of Westminster. The houses are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco dressings, and have a Welsh slate roof. They consist of two four-bay blocks with recessed entrance bays at each end, connected by a central two-bay range that provides access. Steps lead to round-arched entrances with panelled doors, flanked by slender columns and featuring patterned radial fanlights. Number 20 has double doors with a fanlight in a pilastered porch, including a keyed round entrance with a later glazed addition above. A stucco sill band runs along the ground floor. Elliptical-arched recesses contain sash windows with glazing bars, accompanied by iron balconies to numbers 20 and 22. Shutters are present on numbers 24 and 26. The central linking range is distinguished by a moulded first-floor band and a stucco parapet, topped by an overhanging hipped roof with stacks built into the party walls. Number 24 features a patterned iron front railing. A blue plaque at number 20 commemorates the artist William Strang, who lived there from 1900 to 1921.
