Description

These are a row of terraced houses located on York Street, built around 1810 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are constructed of stock brick with the ground floors finished in channelled stucco. They have concealed slate roofs and extend over four storeys with basements. Each building is two windows wide. The ground floor features semicircular arched windows and a doorway on the right-hand side. The panelled doors have reeded jambs and moulded heads, with fanlights retaining a radial pattern at numbers 46 and 48. The recessed sash windows on the ground floor retain glazing bars and radial glazing to the heads, except for number 50, which has arches with struck channelling. Upper floor sash windows, some retaining glazing bars, are set within flat, gauged arches. Stuccowork finishes with a plat band at the first-floor level. A stucco crowning cornice and blocking course runs along the row, with an exception of number 42 which has a parapet with coping. Continuous cast iron balconies with geometric patterns are present on the first floor. The front is completed with cast iron area railings featuring urn finials.
