Description
A range of terraced houses dating from approximately 1830 to 1835, with later alterations, is located on Albion Street. They were likely designed by George Gutch and form part of the early development of Tyburnia, a scheme originally planned by S. P. Cockerell for the Bishop of London's estate (Church Commissioners). The layout was subsequently modified by Cockerell's successor, George Gutch.
The houses are built of brown brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have slate roofs. They are arranged over four storeys and basements, with each front originally two windows wide, although number 35 has two additional windows above a mews archway. The principal entrances are to the right of each front, featuring square or segmental arched doorways with panelled doors and patterned fanlights. The windows are recessed sash windows, some with glazing bars, and those on the upper floors are under flat, gauged arches. A plat band defines the top of the stucco ground floors, a sill band runs along the third floor, and stucco cornices with blocking courses are present. Numbers 36 to 45 have parapets, while numbers 28 to 35 are distinguished by cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern on the first floor, along with cast iron spearhead railings.
