Description

Nos 2 to 8 Carlos Place is a quadrant block of houses built between 1891 and 1893 by J E Trollope of the firm Giles, Gough and Trollope. The houses are constructed of red brick with ornate Portland stone dressings and feature slate roofs. They are designed in a Free English/Flemish Renaissance style, standing four storeys tall with a basement and an attic storey that includes dormers and both shaped and straight gables. The design includes an effective rhythm of canted bay windows across the storeys, balustraded parapets, and gables, with alternating houses adorned with bands of carved brick Renaissance decorative ornament. The canted bays have mullioned lights with glazing bars and leading, and some are topped with ogee copper roofs. The houses feature semicircular arched and recessed porches. Number 8 has a polygonal bay window at the corner and a two-storey rear wing with a timber-framed upper part. The basement areas are enclosed with ornamental cast iron railings, and the prominent panelled stone and brick chimney stacks are visible along the ridge of the roof. This block is part of the rebuilding of Mount Street that took place in the 1880s and 1890s for the Grosvenor Estate, and it occupies a prominent corner site.
