Description

Kettner's Restaurant is a former terrace of houses, now functioning as a restaurant. It dates from around 1735, with some late 17th century fabric, and was altered into a restaurant between 1868 and the 1880s. The building is constructed of painted brick and stucco, with concealed roofs, and stands four storeys tall with basements. Each former house has a front that is three windows wide facing Romilly Street, while the corner elevation and former Nos. 37 to 39 Greek Street are two windows wide. The doorways have been altered to windows, with an early 20th century canopied restaurant entrance at No. 29. The windows feature recessed glazing bar sashes set in stucco architraves on the ground floor, while those on the second floor of No. 29 are flush framed, with some having exposed boxing. Generally, the windows are under flat gauged arches, except for the segmental arches on the second floor of No. 31. There are stucco plat bands, except for No. 28, and parapets with copings, a cornice, and a blocking course on the corner house, as well as a heavy cornice and blocking on former No. 39 Greek Street. The area is enclosed by cast iron railings with urn finials. The interiors have been significantly altered for restaurant use, with the second floor of the Greek Street houses converted into a large room featuring Edwardian panelling in a Jacobean style. However, No. 28 retains part of an early 18th century dog leg staircase with slender turned balusters.
