Description
Nos. 39 and 40 Frith Street are terrace houses that date back to around 1743 and were built by carpenter John Balgrave. The buildings are constructed of stock brick, with earlier brickwork visible on the second floor, and feature a concealed roof. They rise to four storeys, with each house having a front that is three windows wide. The ground floor has mid-20th century shop fronts. The upper floors are fitted with flush framed sash windows, except for the top floor and the second floor of No. 39, where the windows are recessed. The windows are topped with flat gauged red brick arches, and while No. 39 retains its glazing bars, No. 40 has some casements. The buildings also have a parapet with coping and sill bands.
Inside, No. 39 features a dog leg staircase with heavily moulded closed strings, turned balusters that are boxed in, and columnar newels with small pendants, along with elements of cornices and panelling. No. 40 has a pilastered opening from the passage-hall onto the same staircase as No. 39, and its first-floor front room includes cyma panelling and a boxed cornice.
