Description
No. 4 Romilly Street is a terrace house located at the corner with Greek Street, dating from around 1735 and has been altered over time. It features fine quality red brick fronts for both No. 4 and No. 35 Greek Street, which may have been refaced. The corner house, No. 36, was either refaced or rebuilt in the late 19th century. The building is four storeys high and two windows wide, with altered ground floors. The upper floors of No. 4 have flush framed glazing bar sash windows, and there is a parapet with coping. Internally, No. 4 is connected to Nos. 35 and 36 Greek Street. No. 35 has a nearly identical front to No. 4, but with recessed glazing bar sashes, except for the top floor, which has casement windows under flat gauged arches. No. 36 features recessed sashes without glazing bars and has no significant interior features, making it of lesser interest. In contrast, No. 4 and No. 35 retain elements such as panelling and dog leg staircases. Notably, the artist Rowlandson exhibited from No. 4 in 1775.
