Description
This is a town house, now used as a shop and flat, likely built around 1729-1740 and significantly altered in the early 19th century. It is four storeys high, with a basement, and has a two-window front. The front elevation features 4-pane sash windows. At the rear, windows with 12 panes are set under cambered brick arches. A large chimney is shared with the adjacent property at number 66. There is no closet wing or rear extension. The second floor has a solid wall facing the street, while the rear has a mansard roof; it is likely the building originally had a mansard roof, with the front facade altered in the early 19th century, probably by 1840.
The interior is arranged with rooms two windows deep, and the rear rooms feature corner fireplaces. The rooms on the first and second floors, and the staircase compartment, are fully panelled with a simple, recessed design. Cupboards are located to the sides of the fireplaces in the front rooms on the first and second floors. The first-floor rooms have early 19th-century fireplace surrounds. An early 18th-century staircase has a closed string design, turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and columnar newel posts.
This house is a significant example of the smaller houses that were common in the West End, and was likely constructed as part of a larger rebuilding project on the Portland Estate in Soho, occurring around 1725-1734.
