Description
Nos. 69 and 70 Dean Street are a pair of terrace houses built in 1732 by John Meard. They have been significantly altered, particularly with the addition of two top storeys. The buildings are faced with stucco and feature quoin pilasters, with concealed roofs. They rise to five storeys and have basements. No. 69 is four windows wide, while No. 70 is three windows wide.
No. 69 has a Tuscan pilastered doorway that is stuccoed, with 19th-century consoles and a cornice in the second bay from the left. No. 70 features a semicircular arched doorway in an architrave that has been removed to the right. Both houses have sash windows set within recessed stucco architraves, with intact glazing bars on the second floor. The later top floors have segmental arched iron-framed warehouse windows. Each window has sill bands with consoles beneath. A bold stuccoed dentil cornice runs above the second floor, broken over the quoin pilasters, with a parapet that has coping. Wrought iron area railings are present.
No. 69 has a four-bay return to Meard Street, with a channelled ground floor and a pedimented doorway. It has similar fenestration, some of which is blind, along with sill bands. There is a painted stone tablet inscribed "Meards Street, 1732". The interior of No. 69 has been completely altered, while No. 70 retains a good fielded panel interior, although it has been mutilated in recent years. This includes fluted Ionic piers between the front and back ground floor rooms, enriched cornices, a pilastered passage hall, and a dog leg cut and carved string staircase with Doric column balusters and columnar newels with foliate caps.
