Description

Nos. 9 and 11 Meard Street are a uniform pair of terrace houses built around 1732 by John Meard, located at the junction of the earlier western part of Meard Street. The houses are constructed of stock brick with red brick dressings and feature a slate roof. They rise three storeys with basements and dormered mansards. Each house has a front that is three windows wide, which is narrower than the adjacent Nos. 1 to 7.

The paired architraved doorways have carved consoles to the cornice similar to those of Nos. 1 to 7, although the doorway of No. 9 has been altered with the addition of a mid-19th century shop front that includes console stops to the fascia. The windows are flush framed sashes with later 19th century glazing set in red brick dressings beneath flat gauged red brick arches, with the left-hand windows on No. 9 being blind. A parapet with stone coping tops the buildings, and there is a brick plat band above the first-floor window arches. The properties are also adorned with wrought iron area railings featuring urn finials.

Inside, the interiors are fully panelled, except for the shop, and follow a mirror plan with closet wings, passage-halls, and dog leg staircases. The staircases have a Doric pilastered opening from the passage, cut and shaped strings, and Doric turned balusters and newels, along with box cornices. These houses are noted for their architectural significance, and they relate to the contemporary Nos. 67 to 70 Dean Street, also designed by Meard.
