Description

This is a pair of terrace houses at 67 and 68 Dean Street, built between 1731 and 1732 by John Meard. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with the ground floor of number 67 stuccoed, and have tiled roofs. They are four storeys high, with basements. Each front has three windows. Doorways are situated to the left and right, respectively, with panelled doors and rectangular fanlights, recessed within painted stone doorcases featuring Roman Doric pilasters. The entablatures are decorated with triglyphs and rosettes in the friezes, and have projecting cornices. The windows are late Georgian glazing bar sashes, set within slightly recessed segmental brick arches with red brick dressings. A moulded brick cornice runs below the attic storey, and the parapet has stone coping.

The three-bay return of number 68 to Meard Street features three blind windows dressed similarly, and a quoin pilaster strip to the left. A stone tablet reads “Meards Street, 1732.” Early 19th century tassle-head area railings are present.

The interiors of both houses are exceptionally complete, maintaining a similar plan throughout. Features include a panelled passage entrance with a box cornice, a fluted Doric pilastered opening to a dog-leg staircase with carved strings – cut on the ascent to the first floor landing, closed strings above and down to the basement - with Doric column balusters and newels. Further details include moulded and fielded panelling in the first-floor rooms, enriched cornices, original marble fireplaces, and panelled closets with angle fireplaces. The houses are comparable to Meard’s contemporary development in Meard Street.
