Description

Nos. 33 and 33A, Dean Street are a pair of terrace houses dating from around 1734. They are constructed of stock brick with slate roofs, and extend over four storeys plus basements. Each front is three windows wide. The ground floor shop fronts were altered in 1851 by C. Lockyer, and are faced with channelled stucco and feature an order of paired Tuscan pilasters supporting an entablature with a modillion cornice. No. 33 retains its original shop window with arcaded lights. The doorways, both for the house and shop, are square headed, with fanlights and panelled house doors. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows, many with glazing bars. Those on the first floor of No. 33A have exposed boxing and are set within red brick segmental arches. The upper floors of the remaining windows are finished with flat gauged arches. A brick parapet with coping returns to the flank wall of No. 33, where two of the three windows are blind. Cast iron area railings are present. The interiors contain original features, including fluted pilasters in the entrance passages, a closed string staircase with turned balusters (partly boxed in), and box cornices on the first floor of No. 33A.
