Description
The Queen's Theatre is a theatre built in 1907 by W. G. R. Sprague. The facade and front of house were rebuilt in 1958-59 after being partially destroyed by bombing during the war, by Westwood Sons and Partners in collaboration with H. Casson. The rebuild features a steel and glass structure with brick and stone sides and rear, preserving parts of the original auditorium and stage. The theatre has a rectilinear curtain wall that curves around the corner over four storeys, with a canopy above the ground floor. Sprague's front of house block was designed to be symmetrical with the Globe Theatre. The auditorium remains in a modified form, featuring two tiers of cantilevered balconies and a domed ceiling, with much of the original Italian Renaissance style plasterwork intact in front of the balcony fronts. Some of the original wooden machinery below the stage is still in place.
