Description

These are a group of four terraced townhouses, numbered 1-5, located on Spanish Place in the City of Westminster. They were built around 1780-90 as part of the Duke of Manchester's development of Manchester Square, on land owned by the Portman Estate. The buildings are constructed of brown brick with concealed slate roofs and feature four storeys, including an attic storey, and have basements. Each house has a three-window front. The doorways are semicircular and arched, housing panelled doors with sidelights and fanlights, with No. 5 featuring a stuccoed Doric porch. The windows are recessed sash windows in stuccoed reveals, set beneath flat, gauged brick arches. A stucco plat band is visible on the first floor. A painted stone or stucco cornice runs above the second floor, and a stucco cornice and blocking course are found at the attic storey. Original cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern are present on the first floor. The area railings are made of cast iron and are topped with urn finials. A plaque from the Greater London Council at No. 3 records that it was once the residence of Captain Marryat and George Grossmith.
