Description
This is a terrace of four houses with shops, built around 1815 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development associated with Gloucester Place. Numbers 32 and 33 include a mews access. The buildings are constructed of stock and plum brick; number 29 has a channelled stucco ground floor, and number 30 has plain stucco on the ground floor. Slate roofs are hidden behind the parapets.
Each house has a two-window frontage, except for number 32, which has a three-window front extending over the mews entrance. There are semicircular arched doorways with panelled doors and patterned fanlights. Shops occupy the ground floors of numbers 32 and 33; number 33 has a panelled frame and a slightly bowed window, while number 32 has narrow pilasters and a narrow entablature fascia. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes under flat, gauged arches, except for the segmental arches above the mews entrance of number 32. A plat band runs above the stuccoed ground floors. There is a continuous stone-coped parapet along the top of the terrace. Number 29 has a cast iron geometric patterned balcony to the first floor, and number 31 has small balconies. Number 29 also has area railings with urn finials. The terrace is included on the list for its group value with Gloucester Place.
