Description

No. 47 Balcombe Street is an end-of-terrace house with an original shop to one side, dating from approximately 1815 to 1820 and built as part of the Portman Estate development. The building is constructed of stock brick with a plain stucco ground floor, and has a concealed slate roof. It extends over four storeys and includes a basement. The house is two windows wide. A semicircular arched doorway is positioned on the right-hand side, featuring a panelled door within moulded jambs and head, and is topped by a patterned fanlight. A semicircular arched window is at ground floor level. The shop front facing Ivor Place has a square-headed doorway with a blocked fanlight, a panelled door, and a large-panel shop window with an altered fascia. Upper floors have recessed sash windows with glazing bars, set under flat, gauged arches. A plat band runs above the ground floor. The building is topped with a stone-coped parapet. A cast iron balcony with an anthemion-geometric pattern spans the first floor. Cast iron area railings are present, adorned with pineapple finials.
