Description

Nos. 49 and 51 Balcombe Street are a pair of terraced houses built around 1815 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with the ground floor of No. 49 featuring channelled stucco and No. 51 having plain stucco on the ground floor. They have concealed slate roofs. The buildings are four storeys high with a basement, although No. 49 has a slightly lower ground floor. Each house has a front of two windows.

Each property has a semicircular arched doorway on the right-hand side, with panelled doors featuring pilaster jambs topped with cornices, the fanlight above the door of No. 49 being patterned. The ground floor windows are also semicircular arched and contain recessed sash windows. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows with glazing bars, set within flat, gauged arches. A plat band runs above the ground floor. The houses are finished with parapets and stone copings. Cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern are located across the first floor, and cast iron area railings are present to the front; those at No. 49 are topped with pineapple finials, while those at No. 51 have torch finials.
