Description

This is a long terrace of houses dating from approximately 1815 to 1820, built as part of the Portman Estate development. Numbers 132 and 134 are of stock brick, while the rest are faced with stucco, with rusticated stucco at ground floor level. The roofs are slate-covered. The terrace is four storeys high, with a basement. Numbers 132 to 138 have three-window wide fronts, while numbers 140 to 170 have two-window fronts, with number 170A forming the four-window return of number 170.

The doorways have semicircular arches. Numbers 132 to 138 have panelled doors set within Greek Doric column jambs, topped with cornices and fanlights. Numbers 140 to 170 have panelled doors set within pilastered or moulded jambs, also topped with cornices and fanlights. The windows are mostly recessed, with glazing bars. Those on the ground floors of numbers 140 to 170 are semicircular arched, while those on the upper floors are under flat, gauged arches. A plat band runs above the ground floor, and the building is topped with stone-coped parapets. Geometric-anthemion patterned cast iron balconies are present on the first floors. Cast iron area railings, finished with urn finials, are also features. The terrace is part of one of the most comprehensive and intact sequences of Georgian terraced houses in London.
