Description

Chagford House is an almshouse or tenement block dating from the 1840s and 1850s. It is a plain three-part block featuring a central pavilion flanked by recessed wings, all screened by gateways. The building is constructed of stock brick with painted stone or stucco dressings, and has a slate roof. The central pavilion is three bays wide, and the wings each have two bays. A three-centred arch doorway is centrally placed within the pavilion, with a stilted label mould on carved stops. All windows are recessed, with glazing bar sashes in flat, rusticated surrounds, and label moulds on the pavilion. A painted stone or stucco cornice and blocking course runs along the top of the building. Gable-capped piers mark the gateways. A monogram is set within a keystone below the cornice in the centre of the pavilion, displaying a crown and the initials “R.S. over W.” The building has three storeys, with a 20th-century dormered mansard roof.
