Description

Francis Holland Church of England School is a school built in 1915 by H T Hare. It is located on a corner site at the junction of Park Road and Ivor Place. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a tiled roof. Designed in a Free Style that reflects mid-17th century architecture, it emphasizes massing and wall planes, with well-considered fenestration and restrained Stuart detailing.

The school is two storeys tall, with a semi-basement and a dormered attic. It has twelve windows facing Park Road, an entrance at the corner splay, and an eleven-window return along Ivor Place. The entrance features a pilastered doorway that is set forward, with three small windows directly above it. This is topped with corner obelisks and a canted bay window on the first floor, which has mullioned and transomed leaded light windows. The doorway arch is decorated with foliated stops and includes a carved date.

The main street elevations are articulated by very shallow pilaster strips, and there are hipped dormers in the roof, which has flat plastered eaves. A spiked lantern is positioned over the main entrance. The area surrounding the entrance is defined by a parapet wall with a swept treatment and obelisk finialed gate piers that flank the approach to the corner entrance.
