Description
The pair of houses at 62 and 64 Balcombe Street date from around 1830 and were built as part of the Portman Estate development. They are constructed of gault brick with a stuccoed ground floor, and have concealed slate roofs. The houses are four storeys high with a basement. Each front is two windows wide, with a three-window return to Ivor Place.
The doorways, positioned on the right-hand side, have panelled doors set within pilastered jambs, and are topped with entablature-like details and fanlights with an arcaded pattern. To the left of each doorway is a sash window with glazing bars. The return of number 62 features an original shop front with a wooden pilaster frame, a panelled and glazed door, and a small-paned shop window, all beneath an entablature fascia. The upper floors have recessed sash windows with glazing bars within stucco architraves, with cornices above the first-floor windows. Plat bands run above the ground floor and second floor, and a crowning stucco cornice and blocking course tops the building. A cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern extends across the first floor. Cast iron area railings with tasselled spearheads are also present.
