Description
Nos. 61 to 63 Montagu Square are a pair of terraced townhouses built around 1810-11 as part of John Nash’s Montagu-Bryanston Square development for the Portman Estate. They were designed by J.T. Parkinson. The houses are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and stuccoed to the third and fourth floor levels of Nos. 61 and 62. They have concealed slate roofs. The houses are five storeys high with a basement. Each front is three windows wide.
A semicircular arched doorway is located on the right-hand side of the building, at No. 62, with a Coade vermiculated stone surround. The doorway has panelled doors set within pilaster jambs, alongside a fanlight above. Nos. 62 and 63 have two-window segmental bows to the ground floor, extended into the first floor with three windows, and finished off with cornices. Otherwise, recessed sash windows are present under flat, gauged arches on the upper floors. A plat band finishes the ground floor stucco work, with cornices above the second floors of Nos. 61 and 62, and above the third floor of No. 62. A sill band is present at the fourth floor level, along with a crowning cornice and blocking course. Continuous cast iron balconies with a geometric patterned design are present at the first floor level. Cast iron area railings with acorn finials are also visible. The buildings are included in the listing for their group value.
