Description

The Putney War Memorial is a stone cross war memorial commemorating those who served in the First World War, with inscriptions for the Second World War added later. The memorial features a decorated cross with a sculpture of Christ, positioned atop a tall octagonal shaft. The upper part of the shaft is adorned with a band of carved roses and it stands on a three-step octagonal plinth.

The memorial includes several inscriptions. The upper tier on the front reads, "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN / THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY / DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The lower tier on the front states, "+ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN / FROM PUTNEY WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT & VICTORIOUS WAR." On the right side, the upper inscription notes "1939 - 1945 / IN HONOURED MEMORY OF," while the lower inscription honors "THE CIVILIANS OF PUTNEY / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN / THE SECOND WORLD WAR." The back lower inscription reads, "TO THOSE THAT PAID / THE ULTIMATE PRICE IN / ALL WARS AND CONFLICTS." On the left side, the upper inscription states "1939 - 1945 / THE SECOND WORLD WAR / IN HONOURED MEMORY OF," and the lower inscription commemorates "MEN AND WOMEN OF PUTNEY / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES SERVING / IN HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES."
