Description
Werter Road Baptist Church, dated 1884 and designed by Johnson, is a Romanesque-style building. It features a symmetrical design made of yellow brick with rich stone dressings. The low entrance stage is accessed by three flights of steps and supports a massive upper stage. The entrance stage has a slightly advanced center flanked by narrower side bays, all framed by banded piers and an entablature. The central door and the flanking lancets have stepped round-arched heads, with similar doors in the side bays. The upper stage continues the tripartite articulation, featuring a lofty central two-light window set in a stepped arch under a gable, while the side bays are pierced by single lancets that rise into complex towers. Heavy iron area railings surround the church.
