Description

A group of bollards located on the pavement edge in front of the site of the former Brunswick Theatre, extending from the north corner of the Sailor's Home southwards to control the doorway of the D T Merchant Marine Office. These bollards were created in 1828 and are made of cast iron, featuring a square base that transitions to an octagonal top with a low, pyramidal cap. They are horizontally reeded all over, and each side displays the monogram "R.B.T" along with a crown above it. The initials represent the Royal Brunswick Theatre, which was built in 1828 but tragically collapsed during a rehearsal just three days after its opening, resulting in significant loss of life. The bollards are the only remaining visible evidence of the theatre and are listed for their historical significance as well as their intrinsic value.
