Description

The Crown and Seven Stars Public House is an early to mid-19th century stucco building that stands four storeys tall and features two windows. The top storey may have been added later. The building is distinguished by giant Ionic pilasters that rest on the ground floor cornice, supporting a modified entablature with the inscription "WHOLESALE AND RETAIL." Above this, shorter pilasters with floral capitals support a parapet band that bears the inscription "WAREHOUSE." At the centre of the third floor, there is a high relief crown on a plinth surrounded by seven stars. The building has sash windows, with those on the second and third floors set in moulded architraves, while the first floor windows are in round-arched recesses with an impost string. An ornamental cast iron gas lamp bracket is located at the centre of the first floor. The public house front, dating from the later 19th century, features canted angles and ornamental cast iron columns that support the first floor angles. Shorter similar columns with doubled brackets above support the fascia and define the bays. The original double doors remain, although the glazing has been renewed. A fancy cast iron rail is positioned above the fascia cornice.
