Description

The Church of the English Martyrs is a Gothic-style church of 1875, designed by Edward Welby Pugin. The aisled building is rectangular, incorporating eastern transepts and a sanctuary. Constructed in brick with stone dressings and banding, the liturgical west front, which faces Prescot Street, features a double portico and an octagonal bell-turret to one side. The interior has plastered walls and a vaulted ceiling. A gallery is present at the west end and to the aisles, supported by shallow arches on two-stage polished granite piers. The sanctuary has an apsed shape, beneath a large window which is repeated at the west end.
