Description
The Hydraulic Pumping Station, built in 1886, was designed to power hoists at the goods depot of the Tilbury Docks Railway. This rectangular building measures three by four bays and stands three storeys tall, constructed of red brick with stone dressings and segmental window-arches made of blue engineering brick. Plain brick pilasters are positioned between the upper windows. At the west end, there is a square tower that rises to four storeys, giving the structure a slight resemblance to an 18th-century church.
Inside, the walls are lined with brown glazed bricks below and white glazed bricks above, topped with a steel truss roof. The main area served as the engine house, while the tower contained the accumulators, one of which remains in place. Additionally, the square base of the chimney is still visible at the southwest corner.
