Description

These are two early 19th-century buildings, numbers 40 and 42 Newark Street, located in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. The buildings are constructed of stock brick and feature a parapet. The roof is not visible. They are three storeys high with a basement. Each building has two sash windows on each visible floor. The ground-floor windows are round-headed, while the first-floor windows are set within brick arched recesses. Most of the glazing bars remain, except on the first floor of number 40. Cast-iron balconies are present at the first floor level. The doorcases have moulded stucco surrounds, taking the form of round arches with semi-circular fanlights above. Number 40 has a four-panel door. Numbers 28 to 42, even, form a group with St Augustine with St Philip’s Church, located on Stepney Way.
