Description
The London Hospital, located on Whitechapel Road, was begun in 1751 and designed by architect Boulton Mainwaring. The building features brick construction with a slate roof. It has a central block that is advanced and consists of seven bays, topped with a pediment over five bays, a clock in the tympanum, and a balustraded parapet. The ground floor is arcaded with rusticated brick arches. The first and second floors have windows separated by pilasters, with two pairs of windows at each end. The eastern reveal includes a round-arched window with tracery, and a similar window remains on the facade. There are flanking recessed wings to the east and west, each four storeys high with dormers, leading to advanced wings on the eastern side that consist of eleven bays. The wings are made of yellow brick and feature a stone cornice at the parapet, a band above the first floor, and gauged flat arches over the recessed windows. The buildings numbered 138 to 174 (even) form a group with The London Hospital.
